According to The New Vegetarian by Amato and Partridge (Plenum Press, 1989, p. 34), vegetarian motives were as follows (the percentages add up to greater than 100% becasue of respondent's multiple reasons for becoming vegetarians):
Out of concern for animal suffering -- 67%
For personal health -- 38%
Religion or spirituality -- 17%
Distaste for meat or aesthetic concerns -- 12%
Personal growth -- 7%
Desire for non-violent lifestyle -- 5%
Environmental concerns -- 5%
Meat is not the natural human diet -- 4%
High cost of meat -- 3%
To conform to a social norm -- 1%
Other idiosyncratic motive -- 1%
