"Hello, Just happened to stumble upon your article and I think it is one of God's small blessings through the pen. I am an African American female and I feel that each one of us needs to make a difference no matter how small. Sometimes standing alone and being unpopular can be the right thing to do.......just like some great people in the past. Right now, many Arab Americans and Muslim Americans are experiencing racism because of the attacks that recently happened here in the U.S. I feel sorry for people who judge people by how they look and not by their actions (or getting to know them on an individual basis). I am currently serving in our military and I am happy to see that we seem to have some solidarity as Americans right now ...but how long will it last? I've just read some comments posted here, using the "N" word, and unfortunately these are some of the "diseased" elements in our society that I and many other Americans (of all colors) are going to defend? I am sure these same people would judge me if they saw how I dressed (I like wearing bandanas on my head because sometimes I don't feel like fixing my hair!), even though I am 28 years old and in the middle of completing my Masters degree in Organizatinal Mgmt!!! Well, God bless you for having this article. I think in EVERY race there are "ANGELS" and there are also those who want to promote the Devil's work. I guess its up to each individual to decide what team they are living for..... Take Care!"

"I just finished reading your anecdotes titled "How I learned to hate racism." Unfortunately, I found them to be very poorly written and of a sophomorish quality. I find it curious that you failed to address the roots of racism in modern US culture outside of the typically clouded and apologetic "former slave" drivel. For instance, all one has to do is consult the FBI's publically available statistics concerning crime, race, education, and unemployment. Although it is a "politically incorrect" thing to write, it is nevertheless a fact that blacks are across the board of a disproportionately-high percentage/inclination to be poorly educated, of a criminal background, unemployed and/or woefully unskilled when compared to asians, hispanics, or whites. It is sadly irrefutable. Thus, it stands to reason that many segments of the population (be they asian, middle-eastern, etc.) have poor to extremely low expectations or assumptions about blacks. Were blacks (collectively) to suddenly change such statistics through personal motivation and/or behavioural modification, then people's perception of them as a race would undoubtedly change. As a form of analogy to help illustrate what I mean: if one were to observe that 7 out of 10 violent crimes or aggravated assaults were committed by a person with blue skin and blue skinned people compose only ~20% of the population Then it is indeed reasonable to be apprehensive when approached by a blue skinned person in a dark alley at night. Not to mention perhaps having a poor outlook or expectation of blue skinned people. It does not mean that all blue skinned people are bad or violent, just that out of self-preservation, an intelligent person would do well to simply recognize blue skinned people as having a statistically significant propensity towards assault and violence. I suggest you take an honest look at the FBI's homepage and then conclude for yourself before "feeling guilty" as you wrote, for having less than savory opinions of a particular segment of the population."

When I initially wrote the story, it contained several statements that were partially written out of anger. Neal's comments were probably in response to some of the angry statements that were in the story at that time, but have since been removed.]
